Performance-Based Assessment Design

Performance-based classrooms demand performance-based assessment.

One of InterPrep's principal strengths lies in its ability to help teachers make concrete connections between the instructional and assessment sides of classroom life. While many American foreign language classrooms are dominated by activities that have students using the language for real-life purposes, a great disconnect is often observed when students experience paper and pencil testing to measure what they know. Not only is this disconcerting and frustrating to students; it also fails to give students the opportunities to demonstrate what they have been practicing in class. performance-based assessment is a way, then, to make instruction and assessment consonant with each other.

InterPrep's work in this area is designed to equip teachers with essential background tools and to guide them through a development and field-test protocol that can go a long way in establishing performance-based assessment as a mainstay of a district's foreign language program.

The experience can occur in as few as three days or be spread over a number of months or even years, depending on availability of resources and desired end results.  The following examples illustrate InterPrep´s work in this arena.
